PIP Breast Implants

16/01/2012

In a recent article, written for MSN's lifestyle hompage, Dr Rosemary discusses the latest news about the PIP breast implants.

'The PIP implants contained industrial-grade silicone intended for use in mattresses. The implants, which were banned in 2010, have not been shown to be toxic in any way, but do appear to be more at risk of rupture. This allows silicone to leak out into the surrounding tissues, and though some women do not notice it's happened, in others it can cause pain and inflammation, and lead to scar tissue which can change the shape and feel of the breast. Once this has occurred it can make it more difficult for the implant to be removed. However, implant rupture is not linked to an increase in any type of cancer.'

  • Dear "Dr Rosemary Leonard",

Please can you explain why it is acceptable for women who have undergone mastectomy risk and cancer to undertake further risk of implantation, that is no less cosmetic than a breast augmentation for a woman with an AA cup or less, who simply wishes to feel "womanly"? Surely the triggers are similar?

    Kind regards
    Louise
